Empire Senior Games – Track

When volleyball at the Empire Senior Games was cancelled due to COVID, Kathryn started researching other sports that she might be able to compete in. Looking at past performances she felt she could be competitive in track events. She started training for 100, 200 and 400 meter dash in addition to the 1500 meter run. She got two silvers and two golds in the Empire State Senior games. There weren’t a lot of women so some events were combined. Not only did she achieve gold medals within her age group but she placed high across all age competitors in multiple events.

Kathryn’s Run Challenge

Because the pandemic took away volleyball, swimming, going to the gym and travel – all part of Kathryn’s retirement plans – she started running in March. She developed a run through the woods and pastures. Reading the past performances of the 1500m run in the Empire State Senior Games she felt she could compete in that race; there weren’t many participants in the 65+ age bracket and the 9:20 winning time seemed achievable. We measured a mile on the road and 2x a week Kathryn would run 1 mile for time. Today she broke the 9 minute mile goal, with a time of 8 minutes 53 seconds. This time would put her in solid contention in 60+ and 65+ age brackets at the Empire State Senior Games. Unfortunately, it is looking increasingly like they will not hold the ESSG this year.

Empire State Senior Games

Kathyrn joined a team of women from Syracuse and Rochester to compete in the 65+ Division at the Empire State Senior Games in Cortland.  She had a fabulous time at the Empire State Senior Games and played some great volleyball. Their team won most of the games they played against the next-younger age bracket teams and took Gold in our own age bracket. After 12 games of volleyball, it was a long full day.  Below are the “Volleyball Chicks” wearing their gold medals from the 2018 Empire State Senior Games.
