Eric and Friends
Over President’s Day Weekend Eric had Trevor come over for some ice skating and a sleep over. The flooded park in Holland Patent has rough ice and slopes quite a bit, but that didn’t deter them.
There was a lot of falling.
On Monday Kathryn, Eric, Margaret and Harrisen went XC skiing on the Egypt Hill Trails. There was a lot of falling there too. Below Harrisen and Eric enjoy their down-time. Eric ate a lot of snow.

And now the fun stuff!
Wolverine Ski Club
Every Thursday after school Eric goes XC skiing with the local chapter of the Wolverine Ski Club. They play games and learn skills to help them prepare for skate ski racing when they get older. Below Eric poses with some of his team mates after winning a relay race.
SU Lemoyne Basketball
I share season tickets to the SU basketball games with three others. That means I end up with 5 home games. This year the two exhibition games (Cal State & Lemoyne) were lumped as one game I chose to go. I like the early season games as an opportunity to see new players/freshman that are likely not to play regular minutes during the main season.
Most exhibition games are scheduled against Division II and III teams. Last night SU played Lemoyne and lost! It was a good game through out. SU struggled on defense and the Lemoyne students at the game went crazy with the win.
Bittersweet
We have a healthy growth of bittersweet in several trees across the road. Kathryn harvests it for fall decorations. This year she had a bright sunny day for collecting the vines. She and Linda collected it on Friday, gave it a week to dry out and then on Sunday she went to Rochester to visit her brothers and decorated Fran & Isabel’s graves with bittersweet.

Lake Lila
On Sunday 2 August Matt, Kathryn, Eric and I went to Lake Lila for a canoe camping trip. K & I used to go to Lake Lila in the late ’80s and early ’90s when it was considered a “remote” location. No one wanted to portage their canoes in the 3/10ths of a mile required to reach the water. Lighter canoes, the popularity of mass-market kayaks and more participants have increased the pressure on Adirondack waterside camping locations. As we drove in the Lake Lila access road we passed two outward bound vehicle with Vermont license plates and talked with another Vermont couple in the parking lot.
Our plan was to go into Lake Lila as weekend campers were exiting on Sunday afternoon. It rained on Saturday night and most of Sunday morning as we drove to Long Lake to rendezvous with Matt at Hoss’s Store at 2pm. We were on the water and paddling by 3pm.
Below Kathryn, Eric & Jim posed besides the loaded MN II canoe.
We found a nice campsite with a sandy beach perfect for Eric to play and swim and a prevailing westerly breeze.
We set up our tents and Matt cooked beef stroganoff on Sunday night. Monday morning I was awoken by an eagle chirping at 6am. I got up and read for an hour as the mist cleared off the lake. We saw several mature and immature eagles cruising between Lake Lila and Lows Lake.
We had a leisurely breakfast including scones baked in our backpacker oven. On Monday morning we paddled over to Mount Frederica for the short climb to an excellent view.
We had lunch on Mount Frederica and took scads of pictures.
In the afternoon we hung around camp, swam and played with the canoes. We let Eric jump off the canoe to go swimming and Kathryn took the solo Prism out for a little spin in afternoon.
Matt was stressed by the whole affair.
Lawns
A lot of people have complained about the weather this summer: cool, with frequent light showers and thunderstorms. However, for someone starting lawns in July it has worked out well. The lawn around the house has recovered nicely and will likely be trimmed the next time we mow.
We moved our peonies along the fence between the fence and driveway. They are doing well considering they sat in tubs under the shed for a couple of weeks. The re-seeded lawn is thick and doing well too. Also visible is the driveway rubble mix that we spread on the new driveway.
The other hillside sections got seeded later and are a little slower coming in, but look like they will be OK. The mulch we spread is still visible as the wet bales of hay were very clumpy and hard to spread.
Finally a shot of our driveway looking down from the deck.
