Compost And Red Wiggler Worms

We compost. During the summer this mean putting left over vegetables, egg shells, fruit, etc. in a large compost box. We aren’t too good at doing all procedures you are supposed to do to create healthy compost; watering, turning it over, etc. But our system used to work pretty good as the compost box was located next to a hedge and sat on a section of usually damp ground. Stuff rotted and the garter snakes loved it – nesting in the compost and sitting in it’s heat.

Two years ago we pulled out the white cedar hedge, rolled up the barbwire fence and got a professional fence company to install block wire and board fence around the roughly two acre lot that the house sits on. One causality was the site for the compost box – it got moved. The new site is drier and the compost doesn’t rot as well – the snakes have abandoned us. So at the end of the fall I was forced to make a decision about the un-rotted compost. Either dump it as is out in the pasture, leave it until next year or figure out a way to compost it.

The answer: red wiggler worms. I transferred all the compost into a 55 gal plastic barrel, soaked it, moved the barrel into the basement and bought 1lb of red wiggler worms. 1lb was probably not enough worms for the amount of compost we had accumulated, but I wanted to make sure everyone had enough to eat until spring, when they could be released. Plus red wigglers are prolific breeders, laying one egg capsule nearly every seven days. Each worm capsule will hatch an average of 3 to 4 earthworms. The hatched earthworms will grow to adults in about three months.

Here the red wigglers are being deployed before being covered up with old damp towels. So far the red wigglers have reduced the barrel volume from 3/4 full to roughly 1/2 full even though we have continued to contribute our vegetable & fruit scraps.

Winter Starts…..

We have had some cold mornings so far. The ponds have frozen over, thawed and re-frozen. We have had snow but it melted during the day. This morning felt different. For one thing the town snowplows were out during the night – plowing and sanding. It was cold this morning and we got 1-2 inches of snow that hung around all day.

A telling first sign of winter is a driver off the road. As I walked to my car to leave for work a red pickup truck went by 55+mph – fast enough to make me think “That driver is going too fast”. Sure enough about 1.5 miles west the red pickup was parked on it’s nose in a deep ditch with the driver talking on a cell phone.  Welcome to winter!

Media We Are Hitting

Lately we have some favorite media we are hitting on:

TV: Eric’s latest fave is Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs. It has been on for awhile, but he recently discovered it and watches it over any Noggin cartoons. There is an element of slapstick humor as Mike Rowe gets bitten by snakes, falls in mud, plays with bugs and gets dirty. I try to find the education element value in the show. Hey – it beats Wow, Wow, Wubzy.

Blogs: Confessions of a Pioneer Woman. I noticed this about a week ago on some list of fast rising blogs. Ree lives in the midwest, takes great pictures, posts about her family, living on a cow/calf ranch, cooking and photoshop.

Book: Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. This was loaned to me by a co-worker when I was going to be out of action for awhile. I am still only 2/3rds through the 750+ page book but it is a good read and I recommend it. It doesn’t just focus on Lincoln, but provides insights into contemporaries Edwin Stanton, Salmon Chase, William Seward and Edward Bates.

Thanksgiving Day Post Mortem

When I left for work on Wednesday Eric and Kathryn were cooking up a storm. Eric was tearing up bread for stuffing and Kathryn was dicing celery and onions for same. Below Eric shows the perfect size bread chunks for stuffing.

Later that day Kathryn made pies: French Apple, Cranberry, Peach and Pumpkin Roll.

We had 15 for Thanksgiving Day dinner; Billie Jo & Dakota, Ed, Kelly, Phoenix and Izzabella, Barb & Joe, Christian, Beth, C.T. and Nathan. Due to work and return schedules it was our earliest Thanksgiving Day ever. People came between 10 and 10:30 and we ate at noon. Just before dinner we posed for a family picture.

Red Power Ranger Takes One for the Team

Eric is in a Power Ranger phase.  Playing with Power Rangers is his favorite thing to do.  Of course, he gets to pick who gets what Power Rangers.  Sometimes we practice “picking fair” – by taking selection turns, but if given the choice he will pick all the newest ones and leave the injured and repaired Power Rangers to me.  Usually I don’t fight it which means I end up with Black and “Red The Taped”, both whom have suffered serious leg injuries, been glued, re-injured and finally taped again.

In the scene below the castle serves as the home for Eric’s guys, including Shrek, as they witness the horrible decapitation of “Red The Taped” by T-Rex.  After this “Red The Taped” was ‘buried’ and the dinosaur continued his reign of terror against the rest of my guys.  Fortunately after all my guys were wiped out Eric declared they were all healed and could come back to life.  Wheah……. that was close.

Tractor Equipment Stored for the Winter

I have all my tractor equipment tucked away for the winter. It’s a little trick I learned from a friend that used to buy and sell commercial trucks for a living. He sure saved me from having to learn this the hard and expensive way. So basically what I did was get the pop-up camper loaded with moth balls (to deter mice) and set up inside the barn along with the pickup truck and tractor itself. I like to keep certain tractor parts in hand just in case it breaks down on me halfway through getting the work done. It’s worked nicely since I started doing it. Tractors undergo plenty of wear tear even if they’re built well. The parts along with the equipment will be stored in there so that I know they’re in good condition when I need them.

When the weather turns really bad I will start parking the Volvo in the barn, right now it is too convenient to just tuck it under the lean-to.

The Volvo, snowblower, two bottomplows, back blade, discs, harrows and wood chipper all fit under the lean-to off the barn.

The brush hog and 3-point hitch boom occupy 1/2 of the run-in shed while the other side contains two slip scoops and an extra metal gate. Unfortunately, the wagon sits outside all winter. This spring Kathryn gave it a good painting with the left over deck water treatment.

Sunday Countdown

We are expecting 15 for Thanksgiving with several kids. We spent much of the weekend moving furniture, picking up, creating play spaces and cleaning. But all work and no play is no fun, so Sunday afternoon we took a short walk, sat in the sun and enjoyed being outside.

Another Cookout.

img_2965.JPG The weather was so nice on Saturday that we decided another cook out at the far corner of the 40 acre wood lot was in order. We loaded food, drinks and lawn chairs into the pickup truck. We were joined by Bob, Skip, Rhinda, Molly and her two boys: Matthew & Micheal. Eric and Matthew went over early with me to build the fire – although mainly they just whacked stuff. Kathryn and Molly walked over with Michael, who at 3 years old needed to be carried part way. We cooked hot dogs garnished with Bob’s homemade sauerkraut. We drank hot cider and hot chocolate. The boys cooked marshmallows. The temperature took a tumble from the 30s into the mid-twenties as the sun set and we returned home.

Snowball Fight !

We had snow Saturday morning and it hung around for quite a while. This was our weekend to get the house in order prior to having Thanksgiving Day company, but Eric, the dogs and I couldn’t resist getting outside for a snowball fight.

Don’t trust that kid – he has a snowball behind his back!

This could be trouble.

Back To Work !

I went back to work full time on Tuesday. I was really getting used to the ‘retiredcrying_child.jpg ‘ schedule.

I had a EKG on Tuesday morning with everything checking out OK. I had my list of things to ask my cardiologist. Can I: swim, use the hot tub, hike, backpack, cut wood, play volleyball? And I got OKs for all – so I cut wood and went to the Y twice during the week.

On Friday evening we took Ed and family out for dinner to celebrate Ed’s 30th birthday. We went out for pizza and the kids were all good. We had a good time until we left. The snow was squalling and it was a little nasty leaving Syracuse. We drove out of the storm and had no problems until we came up the hill to our road, which was covered with ice. I almost fell twice going across the road to get the mail.
