U8 2010 Soccer Game

After last years successful soccer season the U8 team was gutted and I received all new players.  The new team has 10 players (too many); three of which have never played soccer.  It has been back to the basics learning throw-ins, corner kicks, ball skills and defensive positioning.

Our 1st scrimmage we were beat 9-0 with only one shot on goal.  We had no spacing on offense and watched the ball enter the goal on defense.  After that game we worked on offensive spacing and our 1st game, against the same team, we fared better, losing 5-2.  Three goals were uncontested – perhaps even unnoticed!

So the following week we focused on defense and our 2nd game we won 5-3 with major improvements by all players.  If we can tighten up our defense, learn to mark our opponents, and get all three players involved in the offense we can make the next jump in improvement.

SCS 1970-75 Reunion

Back in July of 2009 I saw Martha (Tripp) Garing at a Howe Cavern’s reunion. We got to talking about old Schoharie Central School classmates that we had seen and our lack of regular reunions. I mentioned to Martha that I thought a multi-year reunion would be a good idea. I told her she would be the perfect person to head the committee effort that would be required to pull this event off.

Martha recruited a number of people to assist and we began meeting in late 2009. We decided to include the classes of 1970 – 1975.

We established 18 September as the preferred date and began planning a number of activities around that weekend. A bonfire, discounts at vendors, a tour of the school, dinner at Olde Tater Barn and a Sunday Brunch.

We had between 150-200 people at the Friday night bonfire.

We had 11 invited faculty, 230 dinners and about 20 ‘walk-ins’ to our Saturday night dinner. Our class of 1971 had 88 graduates. We lost 4 to death and had 6 that I was never able to locate. From the remaining we had about 30 attend and about half brought a guest.

Martha and I developed a program to hand out to our 1971 classmates. During the night we played some of the Top 100 hits from 1970-75.

The Sunday Brunch attracted 60 participants from all the classes.

Canoeing the West Sacandaga

Kathryn was attending a baby shower for Shelly. Our U8 soccer team had a bye week so Eric and I joined Skip and friends canoeing down the West Sacandaga River. I dropped an extra seat in my Jensen 18 and paddled it like a solo canoe, with Eric contributing when he felt like it. Fortunately this is a fast canoe so we could power past the water fights when desired. By myself I could just outdistance the other canoes and when extra power/speed was needed, Eric provided the Turbo-boost to sprint a safe distance.

We had 6 canoes and 2 kayaks in attendance. There was only one obstacle on the West Sacandaga, requiring a bit of a limbo maneuver as demonstrated by Skip and his nephew below.

Our wild life viewing was limited to one Great Blue Heron and a pile of moose dung, but the weather was ideal and the company was a lot of fun.

Volleyball Wrap Up

This past week we faced the playoffs for both our Wednesday night team: The Volley Llamas and our Thursday night team: The Sand Fleas.

Our Volley Llamas team finished in 1st place in the 7 team “Family/Recreational” League.  We had an opening bye and played vs. Finndale Farms, who gave us challenging matches every time we played them this summer.  We won 2 games and faced Team 5 in the finals.  Team 5 took the opening game, we won the 2nd game and we were defeated in the final game of the match.

Our Sand Fleas team finished 2nd in the competitive Thursday night league.  The top 4 teams of the league were close in talent and standings.

We easily won our opening match vs Sandy Balls, who had won their 10 vs 8 opening round.

We lost a close game 1 of our match vs 4th  place Git It Up.  Then we got off to a horrendous start in game 2.  We went down 0-8 because neither Scott or I hit anything into their court.  Fortunately, we pulled it together and won forcing game 3.  We were tied close in game 3 until the early teens then I got on a good serving streak where they were never able to really control the ball and were just returning it.  We were able to take their returns and make plays.  I think we won 25-14.  A heart breaker for them.

We faced Swingers in the finals and played poorly – they won it with two easy games.  I don’t know if it was fatigue (Kathryn and I played in the finals on Wed night), or the fact that we lost concentration or were tired from the previous round, or, or, or…….

They were the same Swingers team that we smoked the previous week 3-0 in the position round.  We were the same except Chris Poore subbed for Rob and Chris played great.  I think they were extremely motivated to redeem themselves. The continuity of having Rob might have made a difference but even his best game couldn’t have overcome all our errors.  It was one of the worst nights of play that I had this summer – not the way to finish the year.  I don’t begrudge Swingers the win/title – I just wish I had played better and we had given them more of a battle in the finals.

With Apologies to Frank Sinatra (We did it our way…..)

And now the playoffs are done
They didn’t end the way we wanted
My friend, we had lot’s of fun
But last night my dreams were haunted

We opened up against Sandy Balls
Unable to pass, they were easy prey
It only took, just two quick games
We did it our way.

Next was the semi-final round
And you likely guessed it, yup
For to reach the crown
We had to beat Team Git It Up.

They opened up and took the first
It was much to our dismay
And in the 2nd we needed a burst
We had to do it our way

We were down, it was 0 to 8
You couldn’t find a single grin
Jim & Scott weren’t playing great.
But the Sand Fleas rallied to win

In the 3rd game they changed their team
To bring in height and better players
We stuck to our plan, true to our scheme
For we were stayers

The teams were tied in the teens,
Jim served eight points straight
And you know what that means
Into the finals we skate.

To reach the finals, to make it through
The Swingers had coasted
They beat us in two
We played poor and soon we were toasted

Regrets, I have a few
They are the cause of this tension
Several plays, I want to re-do
They might have kept us in contention

But overall, on the whole
At the end of the day
We took our toll
And said we did it our way!

The Ballard of Bill (and Rob)

The Ballard of Bill (and Rob)

Our Sand Fleas team was looking good
Of the ten team league 2nd place we stood.

We were playing that night in position round
Against 1st place Swingers who had beat us sound

The team gathered early for the 7pm game
Except for one, who shall yet be named.

There was Jim, Rob, Cathy.  Kathryn and Scott
But lacking was Bill.  At the game he was not.

Beth came to watch and sat in a chair
Reluctant to play- due to her clothes and loose hair.

Let’s go, growled Jim, we’ll play with who’s here!
If Bill shows up soon, we’ll make him buy beer.

So the Sand Fleas gathered for their opening cheer
And the words from their throats were exceedingly clear.

The cheer was loud for the team was inflamed
“SCREW BILL”! – in one loud voice we proclaimed.

So we played volleyball with inspiration and passion
(Quite opposite of the usual Sand Fleas fashion.)

Bill soon showed up but had to fetch ale
Then stepped on the court and helped us prevail.

It all ended well with three quality wins
And we forgave Bill for his tardiness sins.

Now we are facing the play-off game
Winning the playoffs would bring the team fame

We’re united to bring glory to the Sand Fleas nation
(Except for Rob, who leaves on vacation.)

On Thursday we gather with our intent quite plain
You know the story, I don’t have to explain.

The opening cheer will come from an angry mob,
As the Sand Fleas proclaim “SCREW ROB”!

Toddy Pond, Maine

We have been blessed with wonderful weather during our vacation. We went swimming every day – usually twice. We did jumping competitions from the dock; swam to a large nearby rock for sunning; and twice we took out the pontoon boat for tubing and swimming in the middle of the lake. We played Jump or Dive, Marco Polo and any other ad hoc water game we could think of.

Below Eric, Kathryn and Scout lounge on the large rock and then Scout, Kathryn and Eric swim in from the rock.

Below Pam relaxes in the tube while Eric prefers being thrown into the water.

Below Jim prepares to dunk Eric, who can be seen below the water in the next picture.

Kathryn and Jim Helmer ride the waves while tubing.

Kathryn picks blue berries. Jim and Eric enjoy fishing from the end of the dock at evening.

Scout, Kathryn, Jim and Eric around the evening fire. Kathryn and Pam on top of Blue Hill Mountain.

We had lots of native blueberries – in fact every other day 2-3 people would pick a bowl from the surrounding bushes for our breakfast cereal. We had a home cooked lobster meal one night, did take out lobster rolls one night, got invited to friends for chicken BBQ and ate at an ocean side restaurant last night to celebrate our 34th year anniversary.

We had a campfire for 3 nights. On Sunday or Monday night we saw a meteor shower with 8 meteors in a 10 minute span including one of the brightest single meteors I have ever seen.

In ‘down’ times we played lots of Sorry. We picked up a new board game called Scotland Yard and played that several times between swims as well.

We had one more quick swim before lunch on Saturday and then drove the 4-5 hours to stay in a motel 6 just NW of Boston and then completed our trip on Sunday morning. Somehow a single 9 hour drive isn’t that appealing.

Hunting Fossils in Trenton Gorge

We hiked into a nearby gorge hunting trilobites. It was a steep path down by the bridge. The bridge is hinged and was hauled in two sections and bolted together.

It was a short hike downstream.

Everyone got looking. Skip and Kathryn ponder the rocks.

Eric decided to try going behind the water fall. Kathryn checks a cliff.

Eric found a great specimen.

Billie Jo and Joel. Everyone is accounted for.

We hiked out and went tubing on the West Canada for the remainder of the day.

New Floors

As part of our home remodeling we ended up with new hardwood flooring where they did the wall removal work. This is where the old bathroom was at one point and where we ripped up the carpet in the living room.  It was a lot of work to move all our furniture out of the house and stored it in the upstairs or barn.

While we were vacationing at Keuka Lake our floors were refinished.  They are bright and clean.  Below looking both ways up and down the hall.

Keuka Lake

Tom & Debby were visiting from Seattle for the Skelly Family Reunion. Following the reunion they booked a camp on Keuka Lake and invited us to spend the week with them. It was hot and sunny with temperatures in the 90s every day. Sunday we went grocery shopping and swam. Sunday night we watched Flares Around the Lake and 90 minutes of fireworks. At times there were 12 simultaneous fireworks visible from our viewpoint on the dock.

Monday Kathryn, Eric and Debby went to Roseland Water Park. Tom and I went to the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. Tuesday we stayed home to swim and in the evening we drove to Victor to shop at LL Bean and met Pat and Janice for Dinner . Wednesday Kathryn, Tom and Debbie went on a Wine Tour while Eric and I swam and had water gun wars. Thursday we swam and fished. Friday we returned home.

When we weren’t in the water and spraying each other we had marathon Sorry games – below Eric and Debby do battle.

Skelly Family Reunion

The week prior to the 4th of July weekend we worked to empty our house of furniture such that all the hardwood floors could be refinished while we were gone.  Saturday morning Billie Jo came to our house and we drove 2 cars to Syracuse to meet with Ed & family and proceeded to Rochester for the Skelly Family reunion.  There were 120-130 attendees.  Each family unit was organized by Tribe.  The tribe of John Francis Skelly is shown below.
